WeChat Search and Sogou: the China search channel foreign brands forget

SEP 4, 2026 8 MIN READ BY JAY LEONG

Short version: when foreign brands say "China search," they mean Baidu, and they're arguing about the wrong map. The search that decides whether a Chinese consumer trusts you happens inside WeChat — souyisou, the little "search" bar most brands never optimize for — where more than a billion people already are. Sogou, the web engine Tencent owns, matters mostly as the pipe that lets that in-app search reach the open web. If a competitor owns your brand name inside WeChat and you don't, you're losing the one search query that was always going to convert.

I've sat in a lot of China search reviews, and they nearly all open the same way: someone puts up a Baidu ranking dashboard and a slide about keyword bids. It's not wrong, exactly. It's just aimed at the smallest room in the house. Baidu still leads open web search in China, but the open web isn't where most Chinese consumers spend their day — WeChat is. And WeChat has its own search box that behaves nothing like Baidu, answers to nothing Baidu indexes, and quietly decides what shows up when someone types your name after a friend mentions you. Miss that and you've optimized the wrong front door.

Two different things wear the word "search"

The confusion starts because "China search" bundles two very different animals, and foreign brands keep treating them as one budget line.

The first is open web search — Baidu, Bing (which is surprisingly large in China), Haosou, and Sogou. That's the world of indexed pages, meta tags, and the SEO playbook you already know. Sogou lives here, and it's small: recent market-share snapshots put it around 2% of Chinese web search and drifting down. Tencent bought it in 2021, and on its own that number would make Sogou a footnote.

The second is in-app search inside WeChat — souyisou (搜一搜), the search bar you reach from the top of the Chats tab. This is the one that matters, because WeChat has more than 1.4 billion users and they don't leave to Google something; they search where they already are. Souyisou returns official accounts, articles, mini-programs, videos (Channels), Q&A, products, and — increasingly — a direct answer, all from inside Tencent's walled garden. Baidu can't see any of it. That's the whole point.

Here's where the two connect: when souyisou needs a result from the open web, it has historically leaned on Sogou as the pipe. So Sogou's real value to a foreign brand isn't its tiny standalone share — it's that it feeds the search a billion-plus people actually use. You care about Sogou the way you'd care about the plumbing behind a wall, not the faucet.

What souyisou actually pulls from

The mistake I see is brands treating WeChat as a broadcast channel — post an article, move on — and never asking what a search inside WeChat returns for their category. Souyisou ranks and blends several content types you either own or don't:

SurfaceWhat it isWho controls it
Official Account contentYour published articles, indexed and searchable by keywordYou — if you actually publish with search intent in mind
Mini-programsYour store, tools, or service, surfaced by name and functionYou — mini-programs report well over a billion monthly users and dozens of entry points
Channels (video)Short video and livestream clips inside WeChatYou, if you post there; most foreign brands don't
Brand Zone (pinpai zhuanqu)A paid takeover of the results page for your brand keywordsYou — but only if you buy and configure it
Third-party articles & Q&AWhat other accounts and users say about youNobody, directly — this is earned or hijacked

Read that last row again. If you don't own the top of your own branded results, someone else fills the gap — a distributor, a daigou reseller, a competitor running comparison content, or an out-of-date article from three years ago. In China that vacuum gets filled fast.

Brand Zone: the one thing worth paying for first

If you do only one thing in WeChat search, claim the Brand Zone. When someone searches your (localized) brand name, the Brand Zone lets you take over that results page — banner, tagline, your Official Account, your mini-program store, your latest campaign, service links — instead of leaving it to whatever souyisou scrapes together. It's the digital equivalent of owning the shelf at eye level in the store people already walk into.

The reason to prioritize it: branded search is bottom-of-funnel. The person typing your name has already heard of you — from a KOC post, a friend, a livestream — and is doing the trust check before they buy. Lose that moment to a messy results page and you've paid for the demand and handed the conversion to chance. This is the same logic as defending your brand name in Baidu, just inside the app where the decision is more likely to close.

How to actually rank in souyisou

In-app search rewards different things than open web SEO. A few that consistently move the needle:

  • Publish with query intent, not just campaign intent. Titles and opening lines of Official Account articles should contain the words people search — the category term, the problem, the comparison — not clever wordplay that no one types.
  • Name your mini-program like a search result. A mini-program called "[Brand] Official Store" is findable; one with an abstract campaign name is not.
  • Account authority compounds. A verified account that posts consistently, gets read to the end, and earns interactions ranks better than a dormant one. Souyisou reads engagement as a quality signal.
  • Feed the ecosystem, not one silo. Articles, a mini-program, and Channels videos reinforce each other in results. A brand present in all three occupies more of the page than a brand present in one.
  • Localize the query. People search the Chinese term, the pinyin, the nickname, and sometimes the English name. Cover the ones that actually get typed, which is a listening exercise, not a guess — the same discipline as treating Douyin as a search engine.

Where Sogou still earns a line in the plan

Don't build a Sogou-first strategy — the share doesn't justify it. But two things make it worth a checkbox. One, it's the default search in QQ Browser and parts of the Tencent ecosystem, so a slice of users genuinely land there. Two, because it can surface WeChat and QQ social content that other engines can't index, a clean presence on Sogou occasionally shows Tencent-ecosystem results your Baidu work never will. Treat it as hygiene: make sure your key pages and Official Account are discoverable, and move on. The effort belongs inside WeChat.

A sane order of operations

PriorityMoveWhy now
1Claim and configure the WeChat Brand Zone for your branded termsDefends the highest-intent query you have
2Make your Official Account and mini-program findable by function and categoryCaptures non-branded, "problem" searches
3Publish category content built around real queriesBuilds the earned layer souyisou ranks
4Add Channels video into the mixOccupies more of the results page competitors leave empty
5Basic Sogou / open-web hygieneCheap insurance, not a growth lever

Bottom line

The China search debate foreign brands love to have — Baidu bids, meta tags, open-web rankings — is a debate about the smallest room in the house. The search that decides whether someone buys happens inside WeChat, where a billion-plus people already are, and most foreign brands have never even looked at what souyisou returns for their name. Sogou is the plumbing; the Brand Zone is the shelf; the earned content is the proof. Own the front door people actually use, and the rest of your China search spend gets a lot easier to justify.
